Let’s begin with a bit of trivia: Thousands of versions of the fairytale, Cinderella, exist in various cultures throughout the world. This well-known story has roots that go back so far that they are difficult to pinpoint. But it is believed that the first “Cinderella story” was recorded in ancient Greece in the time period of first century BC and the heroine’s name was actually Rhodopis. This lovely and impoverished girl became a royal wife when an eagle snatched her sandal and dropped it on the head of the king… For more information, I will leave you to your own research but isn’t your imagination spinning as you envision these foreign details, though the bones of the story are beloved and familiar?
This summer we are celebrating stories from around the world through our Summer Reading theme, “One World Many Stories”. In honor of fairytales from around the world, we invite you and your children to visit the Bookmobile on Saturdays at Boardwalk Park from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Discover your favorite fairytales as they are told with different flavors in countries around the world. During this hour, we will share fairytales and fables from a different country every week (accents will be attempted but we give no guarantees). Each session includes the reading of stories, complimentary songs and activities, and a craft that reinforces a unique attribute of the featured country. While you’re on board check out a book, sign up for Summer Reading and check-in for prizes. We try never to let you leave the BoMo empty-handed. This summer, make your journey to Boardwalk Park a journey around the world and turn an ordinary picnic into a feast for the imagination!
